Ghost Prank Terrifies Elevator Riders in Brazil

NEW YORK (Reuters) - The ageing New York Yankees, struggling to inject youth into their roster, appear poised to sign two of their evergreen core members for one more go-round in a drive for a sixth World Series ring since 1996. Left-handed starting pitcher Andy Pettitte, 40, and all-time Major League Baseball saves leader Mariano Rivera, who turns 43 on Thursday, are reportedly on the verge of signing deals for one last campaign. Those pitchers could well be effective in 2013. Pettitte returned from a one-year retirement last season to go 5-4 with an impressive 2. ...

Rising seas caused by glacial melting linked to Caribbean 'extinction' of bats

ScienceDaily (Nov. 7, 2012) ? In a new study published in the journal Ecology and Evolution, researchers show that rising sea levels produced by deglaciation, or the melting of glaciers, caused the extinction of most bats in the Caribbean Islands, including the Cuban vampire and Puerto Rican flower bats. The article, entitled, "Deglaciation explains bat extinction in the Caribbean," led by Assistant Professor Liliana M. D?valos, PhD, from the Department of Ecology and Evolution at Stony Brook University, shows that deglaciation drowned vast expanses of low-lying islands.

According to Professor D?valos and her colleague Amy L. Russell, PhD, Assistant Professor, Department of Biology at Grand Valley State University in Michigan, the high extinction rate following deglaciation in the Caribbean has been noted for decades and rich fossil deposits in the Bahamas and the Greater Antilles attest to a fauna that no longer exists. Among mammals, most terrestrial species were wiped out around the time humans arrived, and many bat populations that existed elsewhere went extinct (e.g., Cuban vampire bat, Puerto Rican flower bat, etc.) on one or several islands. The many instances of both extinction and persistence of bats across dozens of islands made it an ideal system for investigating how climate change may shape island fauna.

The researchers used deep sea-bathymetry (measurement of underwater depth) and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to model the extent to which land would have been exposed in the Caribbean at the peak of the glaciation, when sea levels were 125 meters below their current levels. Combining the record of current and fossil bats with the area for each island, they then used a simple mathematical relationship between the number of species and area of an island to estimate the number of local extinction events that could be explained by the change in area.

Together, they found that most of the species loss in the Bahamas and Greater Antilles could be explained by the loss of area caused by rising sea levels. In the Lesser Antilles the mathematical models pointed out gaps in the fossil record of most islands. The large impact of area loss on species loss held, even after excluding species that may have colonized the islands recently and accounting for coral growth in the Bahamas.

"There have been many explanations before as to why so many bat populations collapsed: cave drowning, the arrival of new species, lack of tolerance to the warmer and wetter climate of the Holocene are examples," said Professor D?valos.

"We were expecting area loss to be important in explaining extinction, but not as important as we found. This drives home the point that rising sea levels pose great risks to biodiversity today," Professor Russell said.

3 Nursing Care Services You May Not Have Known Existed ...

Elderly people with Grandchild

Seniors that are placed in a nursing home are often unhappy because they feel as though they are losing their independence or they may prefer to maintain their dignity by staying in their home. In home nursing care services is an alternative solution to placing senior citizens in a nursing home.

There are many different types of services that in-home care providers can assist seniors with such as companionship, homemaking duties and therapy as well as encouraging them to participate in home fitness routines and/or helping to prevent depression.

New Services

Nursing care services have come along over the past few years. Home care providers are now being trained to work specifically with seniors who may be beginning to lose hope in their abilities. Home care nursing services are now trained to provide a vast array of services including, but not limited to:

  • Medication teaching
  • Holistic recommendations
  • Occupational therapy
  • Speech therapy
  • Pain management
  • Wound care
  • Disease education
  • Disease management
  • Physical therapy

Three of the most common, yet unexpected nursing care services include companionship, mental health care and help with physical fitness

Companionship

nurse helping lady

It is common for seniors to get lonely when they are unable to get out on their own. Home nursing care services such as this place that does home care in Montreal will provide conversation and company to their clients. If a home care provider is hired to be a companion to the elderly, they will do a variety of different activities with the senior.

Sometimes conversation is all that the senior may want or they may find comfort in knowing that the nursing care services provider will be there with them when they watch their favorite television program. It is common for companions to also help them with their household duties such as cleaning, shopping and/or reminding the client to take their medication.

Mental Health & Depression

Seniors who live alone often become depressed when they do not have family members or friends that visit on a regular basis and/or if they are unable to get out and socialize with others. Depression is a common problem for seniors and it can lead to them not eating, losing interest in activities that were previously enjoyed and depression can cause an elderly person to give up.

Certain nursing care services are trained to provide care to seniors that may suffer with a mental health problem such as depression or anxiety. The caregiver will be beneficial in keeping the senior busy doing activities, reminding them to take their mental health medications and/or can take them to counseling sessions or group meetings designed just for seniors with mental illness.

Physical Fitness

Seniors, who were previously fit and active, tend to put off exercising or doing any type of physical fitness when they do not have someone to exercise with them or encourage them to continue the workouts. Seniors who do not get regular physical fitness can be more prone to hospitalizations, can have more pain due to physical ailments such arthritis and can gain excess weight which may lead to serious health problems.

There are nursing care services that specialize in providing caregivers to help Seniors maintain their physical fitness routines. In many situations, the caregiver will work with a nutritionist to get information about the best diet for seniors and they will often be trained to teach an elderly person the best exercise routine for them.

Rock the Vote ties location and mobile to drive Election Day turnout ...

rock the vote

Rock the Vote is making a last-minute push to drive users to the polls today.

Registered voters can text the keyword WHERE to a short code to find their polling place. Rock the Vote is working with Mozes on this initiative.

Its a simple and easy way for people to find their polling place, said Chrissy Faesen, vice president of marketing and communications at Rock the Vote, Washington.

Sign up to receive Mobile Marketer Daily. The premier mobile marketing publication. Free!

Weve used mobile technology to encourage users to both vote and show up at the polls, she said. We have seen an increase in voter turnout by sending someone a text message with information.

Find a poll
Consumers who are looking for their polling place can text the keyword WHERE to 788683, which is the short code associated with Rock the Votes SMS program.

Users are then sent back a message with their polling location andhours that it is open.

Additionally, the SMS message includes a link that directs users to the Rock the Vote Election Center mobile site. On the site, consumers can find voting information by state, follow the companys social media sites and contact the company will any voting problems.

To help promote the effort, Rock the Vote is pushing the initiative through Facebook and Twitter. Additionally, street teams are encouraging consumers to text in to find their polling locations.

SMS is a great medium for Rock the Vote to use for time-sensitive content. Consumers always have their mobile device on hand as a tool to help them search for information.

Rock the Vote has been relying on mobile heavily this election season.

For example, the company recently partnered with Kenneth Cole on an initiative to drive voter registrations by equipping QR pins on tote bags (see story).

Similarly, Rock the Vote rolled out a line of QR code-enabled t-shirts earlier this year to build up the companys email and SMS databases (see story).

The SMS message

Opted-in users
Although smartphone penetration is growing especially for younger demographics such as Rock the Votes SMS continues to be the most effective medium to reach the most users.

According to Dorrian Porter, CEO of Mozes, Palo Alto, CA,marketers need to think about SMS in three scenarios.

The first is to create an initial engagement with consumers. Secondly, calls-to-action need to be implemented into multiple marketing mediums such as television and print. Finally, SMS should be used to push out alerts.

SMS continues to be important for nonprofits to reach 100 percent of their targeted audience, Mr. Porter said.

While smartphone penetration continues to grow at a tremendous pace, many cell phone users still rely on basic voice and text messaging services to communicate on the go, he said.

Even smartphone users appreciate the simplicity of text messaging when responding to a call-to-action at an event or in print, or when the SMS serves as an alert to a timely or important piece of information.

Facebook For iOS Gets Photo Filters And Multi-Shot Sharing, Beating Twitter To The Punch

Fileters FacebookDon't trust the release notes. Facebook has just added photo filters to its iOS app, though the feature wasn't announced in the version 5.1 "What's New" that highlights multi-photo uploads, slide-out chat buddy list, and Gift giving. Here's a look at the new features in v5.1 and what I think will be added in the next release. There are reports of serious bugs, though, so consider waiting for a patch before installing.

No Doubt apologizes, pulls offensive music video

NEW YORK (AP) ? No Doubt has pulled its new cowboys-and-Indians-themed music video and is apologizing to Native Americans and others offended by the clip.

In a posting on its website, the band says the video for "Looking Hot" was "never to offend, hurt or trivialize Native American people."

The video features Gwen Stefani and bandmate Tony Kanal dressed in traditional Native American clothes, while Adrian Young and Tom Dumont are in cowboy get-ups with guns. Dumont and Young tie up Stefani, while Kanal is behind bars.

The clip includes Stefani riding a horse and singing in a tepee, and a fire-burning dance scene with others dressed in Native American clothes.

The band says it consulted with Native American friends and experts but realize people have been offended and "sincerely apologize."
