Frugal & Focused: Book Review: Money Secrets of the Amish by ...

When I first read the title of the book "Money Secrets of the Amish" by Lorilee Craker, I was intrigued. It was the tagline "Finding True Abundance in Simplicity, Sharing, and Saving" that got me though. I knew this was a book I wanted to read.

In "Money Secrets of the Amish", Lorilee Craker, a descendant of the Amish, explores their money-saving and wealth-building secrets. Inspired by a news segment that discussed how the Amish had emerged unscathed by the recent financial crisis, Craker decided to get back to her Amish roots and learn about their time-tested approach to personal finances. What she found was a people as content as always, free of the cares of the world and worldliness.

The book is written in a very easy, conversational way. I found the more I read the more I enjoyed it. Craker addresses more than a dozen financial tips like rethinking gifts, shopping secondhand and bartering. My family utilizes many of the ideas addressed but this book provides the insight and inspiration to do a better job. This book challenges you to rethink how you spend, save and approach money management. You realize this is more than just managing a budget. It's a completely different way of thinking. As Craker stated in the first chapter "....the Amish way of wealth is a whole inverted lifestyle of thrift, self-control, carefulness, sharing, and community. It's a curious prosperity-a rootedness, simplicity, and a step-back to "quaint" money values-that goes way beyond debt-free living." As it turns out, this isn't really so much a book about financial tips as it is a book about values and how most of us have ours flipped upside down. This book addresses the need to flip them right side up.

I will definitely re-read this book many times over whenever I'm needing a little inspiration to do a better job with what I've been given.
