Ron Washington was club's greatest manager before earning most wins

Sunday?s win provides tangible proof of what is already clear: Ron Washington is the greatest manager in Texas Rangers history.

No one has more wins in club history than Washington, who passed Bobby Valentine with the Rangers? series win in Oakland. It was a fitting place for Washington to earn the mark, since he spent more than a decade with the A?s as one of the top instructors in baseball.

Ron Washington picked up his 582nd victory with the Rangers on Sunday, further validating he is the finest manager in the history of the franchise.

But Washington was the greatest Rangers manager before he claimed win No. 582 as the skipper.

Some of you will argue that the total number of wins doesn?t make Washington a great manager. He bunts too much. He goes with his gut too much. He needs a quicker hook. He?s too loyal and slow to change at times. He benefits from a smart front office and a wealth of young talent.

Some of those points are certainly valid. But couldn?t you make that case about nearly every manager in baseball? What gets lost in the second-guessing of late-inning pitching changes or pinch-hitting opportunities is why Washington was hired in the first place.

General manager Jon Daniels knew he wasn?t getting a shrewd statistician who would play the percentages. He knew he wasn?t getting someone who would make all the right moves.

Daniels hired someone who could teach a young team and an organization about how to win games and create a culture in which teammates relied on one another. He tabbed Washington because he saw in him a terrific motivator and someone who would, no matter how hard it might become, demand that pitching and defense become the hallmark of a contending team, instead of relying too much on a hard-hitting offense.

That?s what makes Washington great. He has helped mold this organization into a consistent winner. The front office has used shrewd trades, solid investment in international markets and money from the current ownership group to provide Washington with a solid team. He then structured the clubhouse in a way where the players act as willing accomplices to his message, forging a bond that is one of the best in the big leagues. The result is an annual contender that racks up wins.

When you?re as confused as I am when Washington inserts Robbie Ross, who?s struggling to get lefties out, against Josh Hamilton late in a tight game and the move backfires, remember he also moved Leonys Martin to the leadoff spot and Ian Kinsler to the 3-hole and it helped spark the offense. And how many thought that was going to work? This team has been littered with injuries, yet Washington has found a way to mix and match and keep his team right in the thick of the pennant race.

To this day, Washington makes moves or does things I don?t understand or would make if I were in his spot. But he also tries things that others wouldn?t dare. And he?s right a whole lot more than he?s wrong (only reminding me and any other ?Monday morning managers? of why he?s got the job and we don?t).

I remember during his first season as manager, Washington repeatedly passed up logical opportunities to use his bench late in games. The team would be in a one- or two-run game and he would opt to stick with his starters -- some of them young -- instead of using a more experienced hitter to try to spark a rally. Or he wouldn?t make some defensive changes late when they seemed warranted. A few times, I felt it cost them some games.

Finally, after watching this for a while, I asked Washington what he was doing. His answer was, essentially: I?m worried about the big picture and building this team into a title contender. I have to know if these young guys can do it and, more importantly, they have to know they can do it.

So Washington would stick with them. The fact that the game was close gave him the opportunity, while the team was clearly in a growing phase, to learn from mistakes or gain confidence from the success in a higher-stress situation late in a game. Other managers might have been worried simply about winning, period. Washington was worried about helping build a contender. And when he desperately needed his club to grind games out, as he likes to say, with his job on the line after a rocky start to the 2008 season, they did.

The lessons that Washington preached seeped throughout the organization. It built trust among Washington and his team and was a building block for the group that has brought this franchise its greatest years. Few teams in the majors play harder for their manager than the Rangers do for Washington.

And we know what a tremendous motivator he is -- through not only his ability to speak to his team and utilize the well-timed team meeting, but how he treats his players in an honest, up-front way without losing faith in them. Don?t discount how important all of that is in when they have to dig deep and fight to come back in a game or have to deal with postseason pressure.

It helps, too, that Washington doesn?t worry about his critics. He believes in what he?s doing and in that clubhouse, and that?s all the matters to him. What you or I say is meaningless, as it should be. All he has done is collect more wins than any other manager in club history and has those two World Series appearances on his resume. No other Texas manager can say that.

So congrats to Ron Washington. He is the greatest manager in Rangers history, period. And now no one has won more games, either.

3 Steps for Regaining Your Love Life Following Trauma | World of ...

3 Steps for Regaining Your Love Life Following TraumaAfter suffering an abusive relationship or sexual trauma, it takes tremendous courage to date. And it can be even more difficult to accept intimacy from a good person.

However, once you know what to look for in terms of roadblocks, the path to love becomes much easier.

Below are three basic steps to help victims heal and find love once again.

1. Find a therapist.

Start your journey of healing with a trained professional. People beginning to date following abuse may have lowered standards. They may be more accepting of bad behavior in dating relationships.

Another common reaction to trauma is to test boundaries or seek high-drama relationships in order to feel intensity or strong feelings. A trained therapist can help identify and heal destructive dating patterns so that these types of relationships are no longer attractive.

2. Practice saying no every day.

It can be difficult to establish boundaries in everyday life after surviving abuse or trauma. You may fear rejection, even from friends and family, or worry that you risk angering others if you say no. But nothing is more powerful than to say no to someone you love, experience queasiness, and realize that your friendship or dating relationship has survived.

Saying no is a great test that the relationships you are forming with other people are healthy and well-balanced. No is not rejection. It is insight into who you are. A good friend or lover will respect ?no.? Even if it is ?no, I do not like that restaurant,? start telling people who you are today.

3. Reciprocate to build trust.

Reciprocation is the safe way to let go of fear and build trust in a relationship without being vulnerable. He or she does something nice, you do something nice back. He or she opens up about something personal, you open up about something personal. Great relationships are built over time where trust is developed by continuous positive interactions.

By slowly opening up to your partner, you can get a better sense of how you feel when you are around him or her. When you are aware of your feelings and acting in accordance with your values, you naturally develop healthy relationships.

Talking humanoid robot launches on Japan rocket

TOKYO (AP) ? The first talking humanoid robot "astronaut" has taken off in a rocket.

Kirobo ? derived from the Japanese words for "hope" and "robot" ? was among five tons of supplies and machinery on a rocket launched Sunday for the International Space Station from Tanegashima, southwestern Japan, the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency, or JAXA, said.

The childlike robot was designed to be a companion for astronaut Koichi Wakata, and will communicate with another robot on Earth, according to developers. Wakata is expected to arrive at the space station in November.

Robot designer Tomotaka Takahashi, of the University of Tokyo, advertiser Dentsu and automaker Toyota Motor Corp. worked on the robot.

The challenge was making sure it could move and talk where there was no gravity.

Ahead of the launch, the 34-centimeter (13-inch) tall Kirobo told reporters, "one small step for me, a giant leap for robots."

Japan boasts the most sophisticated robotics in the world, but because of its "manga" culture, it tends to favor cute robots with human-like characteristics with emotional appeal, a use of technology that has at times drawn criticism for being not productive.

But Takahashi, the designer, said sending a robot into space could help write a new chapter in the history of communication.

"I wish for this robot to function as a mediator between person and machine, or person and Internet and sometimes even between people," he said.

JAXA, Japan's equivalent of NASA, said the rocket launch was successful, and the separation of a cargo vehicle, carrying the robot to the space station, was confirmed about 15 minutes after liftoff.

US band Bloodhound Gang booted from Russia concert

MOSCOW (AP) ? The American rock group Bloodhound Gang was kicked out of a Russian music festival and pelted with eggs after videos emerged of its bass player shoving a Russian flag down his pants at a recent concert in Ukraine. Russian prosecutors are even considering whether to open a criminal case in the matter, which comes amid a rise in U.S.-Russian tensions.

Videos posted online of Wednesday's concert in the Ukrainian city of Odessa show bass player Jared Hasselhoff pushing the Russian white, blue and red flag down the front of his pants and pulling it out the back. He then shouted to the audience: "Don't tell Putin," a reference to Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The incident outraged the Russian government. Maria Minina, a spokeswoman for the weeklong Kubana festival in southern Russia, said Saturday that the band's headlining performance the previous evening had been canceled because of its treatment of the flag.

The American band is known for its sexually explicit songs, including "The Bad Touch," with its unforgettable lyrics: "You and me, baby, ain't nothin' but mammals, so let's do it like they do on the Discovery Channel."

Russian Culture Minister Vladimir Medinsky tweeted Friday night that he had spoken with officials in the southern Krasnodar region, known as Kuban. "Bloodhound Gang is packing its bags," he said in the Twitter post. "These idiots will not perform in Kuban."

Hasselhoff was questioned Saturday by police, according to the Russian Interior Ministry, which said prosecutors have been asked to decide if the musician could be charged with defaming the Russian flag.

The bass player apologized late Friday at a news conference held at the music festival in the city of Anapa, the local Yuga.ru news portal reported. He was quoted saying that he had meant no offense and explaining that it was a band tradition for everything thrown from the stage first to be passed through his pants. Hasselhoff said he decided to throw the flag because some fans had seemed disturbed to see it hanging on the stage.

The scandal caused by the American band in Russia comes at a time of heightened tensions between the two countries over National Security Agency leaker Edward Snowden, who was given temporary asylum in Russia last week to help him evade prosecution in the U.S.

As the Bloodhound Gang members were driving to the Anapa airport on Saturday, activists from a pro-Kremlin youth group threw eggs and tomatoes at their vehicle, Yuga.ru reported.

The band members were taken off their afternoon flight to Moscow after they had already boarded the plane, Russian news agencies reported, citing airline officials. After being questioned by transport police, they took a later flight, the reports said.

Kathy Bates happy being part of FX's 'Horror'

(AP) ? Kathy Bates says she's thrilled to be a regular on FX's "American Horror Story."

It's almost good enough to rid her of the bad taste from her previous stint on series TV.

Even so, she told reporters at a Television Critics Association session on Friday that she's got a bone to pick with NBC, which cancelled "Harry's Law" last season after a two-year run.

Bates said NBC "kicked us to the curb."

Things are happier on her current project, which just began shooting in New Orleans.

The Oscar-winning Bates plays Madame LaLaurie, a real-life 19th-Century Louisiana socialite and serial killer. She co-stars with Sarah Paulson, Angela Bassett and Jessica Lange, who plays a witch.

"American Horror Story: Coven" premieres in October.

Talking to Children about a Parent's Sex Addiction | World of ...

Talking to Children about a Parent's Sex AddictionWorking with sex addiction clients who are parents inevitably brings up the question, ?How and what do we tell the children??

The answer to this question varies from family to family and with the children?s ages and developmental level. Regardless of whether the children are young or adults, parents always want to do the best that they can to help their children through this process.

Children of any age in any family where addiction is present can present a unique challenge. Questions arise as to what, if and how much to tell children about the addiction. Another question that arises is how much the children have been affected by the sexual addiction.

Talking to children about a partner?s sex addiction can be an especially daunting task for a parent. Thoughtful consideration needs to be given as to how to present the information in an appropriate manner. Often, ?sweeping problems under the rug? has been an issue in the sex addict?s family or that of their partner?s family of origin, and secrets and lies have played a role in the addictive cycle for the adults involved. So communicating effectively in a way that benefits the children can be an important step toward breaking this negative cycle.

Parents? behaviors and the way they relate with each other affect children deeply and profoundly. When parents are in crisis, there can be times where a parent does not communicate well with their child, or exhibits depression and anxiety that the child senses. Poor relational skills on a parent?s part can be a source of upset and hurt for children, and can result in the child internalizing negative messages about relationships that follow them into their adult life.

As much as parents wish to shield children from their own mistakes, keeping secrets does not accomplish this.

Prior to disclosing information to children, it is very helpful to speak with a skilled therapist and give careful consideration to what is going to be said. It may be the best choice not to share information regarding the sex addict?s acting-out behaviors; the important thing is to engage in an honest dialogue for a child?s feelings to be heard and voiced.

Older or adult children may need to be told more information, so that their perception of what has occurred is validated, and they can build the coping strategies to manage their feelings surrounding what has happened in the family system.

Regardless, it is very important that parents model addressing problems directly, rather than covertly to propagate healthy strategies for dealing with life issues. A solid relationship with a skilled therapist trained in love and sex addiction can help guide parents through this process.

Legionnaires' outbreak hits Ohio retirement center

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) ? Health officials say Ohio's largest outbreak of Legionnaires' disease has killed five people and sickened 39 others at a retirement community since July.

The state Health Department says the outbreak at Wesley Ridge Retirement Community in Reynoldsburg in central Ohio has been linked to bacteria in an air conditioning cooling tower and several water sources.

Victims range in age from 63 to 99. About 200 people live at the center.

Legionnaires' disease isn't contagious. The rare form of pneumonia is contracted when people breathe in tiny droplets of contaminated water.

The retirement community has taken steps to clean the water by hyper-chlorinating and superheating it. The center is also installing filters on shower heads and advising residents not to drink the water until testing is completed.

Health officials believe those steps have prevented any new infections.

When it comes to Windows RT, Microsoft will be the last man standing

I believe that you're right. Have seen one in action & wasn't impressed at all. It is very well possible that one could buy one of these & never want a Windows brand product again.

And unlike Windows 8, there's a lot of add-on hardware that won't work. Accessories must be "Windows RT" certified. Apps has to be obtained direct from the MS Store, which further handicaps the user.

And to think, judging by the specs, who in their right mind is going to give $1,000 for this?

Acer Iconia W700 - Microsoft Windows

These are overpriced toys & Windows RT is a joke. MS, as always, gets on the wagon too late. Tablets & phones aren't what made MS what is is today (or was until 2012), sales of Windows & Office were.

Come the year 2020, MS likely won't have the 90+% user share that it now has, if they keep shoving this product line down users throats. The majority of portable users still prefers the 15.6" - 17.3" notebooks over low powered toys.

House to vote to repeal health law for 40th time

(AP) ? Maybe the 40th vote to repeal President Barack Obama's health care law will be a charm for opponents of the overhaul.

House Republicans are scheduled to vote Friday on a bill that would prevent the Internal Revenue Service from enforcing or implementing any part of the law they call "Obamacare." It'll mark the 40th vote by the Republican-controlled House to repeal some or all of the law.

Such measures have died in the Democratic-controlled Senate.

Next year, the IRS will begin enforcing the requirement that most individuals have health insurance, collecting fines from people who don't. The IRS also will distribute subsidies to help people buy insurance in new exchanges.

Republicans hope to use the vote to rally opposition to the law as Congress prepares for its summer recess.

Summer reading and the beauty of serendipity

Oh, the magic of finding a great book through the sheer power of chance! Is the summer the best time for that to happen? ?

    By Danny Heitman,?Contributor / August 2, 2013

Monitor book blogger Danny Heitman doesn't often read mystery novels. But this summer he decided to try Alan Bradley?s latest Flavia de Luce novel, ?Speaking From Among the Bones.?

Although we celebrate summer as a season of freedom, it?s also the time of year when readers get the most direction about which books to pick up for vacation reading.

Well-meaning arbiters of literary taste ? including, of course, the folks at ?Chapter & Verse? ? offer lots of well-meaning suggestions and reading lists to help connect book lovers with just the right title.

Nothing wrong with any of that, of course. The next best thing to reading a book, after all, is discussing it and ? when it?s a good one ? recommending a page-turner to others.

But today I?d like to offer a few words in praise of serendipity in summer reading ? the magic of finding a great book not because someone pointed you toward it, but through the sheer power of chance.

All of this came to mind recently when I bumped into a book by Robert James Waller and startled myself by liking it. Waller is best known as the author of ?The Bridges of Madison County,? a wildly popular novel about a pair of lovers in a star-crossed romance. Hats off to Waller for penning such a whopping bestseller, but I never opened the covers of ?Madison County? for myself.

The premise of his novel always struck me as firmly in the genre of chick-lit, so I made a point of steering clear. And thanks to Waller?s signature novel, I?d mentally filed him as a?woman?s writer, assured that I could skip all of his books without regret.

But the other day, while visiting my local library, I spotted the spine of Waller?s ?Old Songs In A New Caf?? from the corner of my eye and decided to pick it up. That?s how I learned of Waller?s previous life as a newspaper essayist before he became a publishing sensation.

?Old Songs In A New Caf?? assembles about two dozen of his vintage columns, mostly from ?The Des Moines Register,? and they?re a pleasure from start to finish, bringing Waller?s poetic sensibility to bear on everything from the death of a treasured pet to the departure of a daughter for college.

The happy accident that brought Waller?s work to my attention made me think of the many other times when helpful quirks of fate landed the perfect book in my lap. As a high schooler killing time at a neighborhood rummage sale, I leaned on a table and found my hand resting on a copy of H.L. Mencken?s ?Minority Report,? discounted for a quarter. I?d never heard of Mencken, the gadfly journalist who had his heyday in the 1920s, but through this castoff title, I became a big fan, eventually filling two bookshelves with his work. The joy that Mencken took in the English language encouraged me to pursue writing as a profession.

During a college internship in Washington, D.C., I was leaving a bookstore at the Smithsonian when a shock of green grabbed my attention. It was the cover of Henry David Thoreau?s ?Walden,? which I bought on a whim, not expecting very much in return. Thoreau?s thoughts on simplicity and the power of local landscape stay with me still. I sometimes wonder how things might have turned out if that book jacket hadn?t been so striking.

Can we encourage these kinds of lucky literary meetings? The nature of luck, after all, is that you can?t really plan it.

But there are things that readers can do to become more open to the playful spin of the reading roulette wheel.

The time-honored art of browsing in a bookstore or library is a good way to indulge random acts of discovery. It?s nice to remind ourselves that we readers often don?t know what we?ll like until we try it.

This summer, I?m also nudging myself out of my usual reading habits. Although I can count on one hand the mystery novels I?ve read, I recently decided, just for kicks, to try Alan Bradley?s latest Flavia de Luce novel, ?Speaking From Among the Bones.? Who knows? Maybe Bradley?s prose could please me as much as Mencken?s, Thoreau?s, or Waller?s.??

We all read for the promise of surprise. But sometimes, as readers, we have to put out the welcome mat for chance.

Summer, perhaps more than any other season, is the time to do just that.

Factbox: States all over the map on Obamacare prices

(Reuters) - U.S. states are showing wide variations on the cost of new insurance plans under President Barack Obama's healthcare reform, fueled by the way Obamacare's supporters and detractors describe those prices.

Below are details of how different states arrived at their rate statistics for 2014.

    STATES SUPPORTIVE OF OBAMACARE

California: Rates in plans available to individuals will range from 2 percent above to 29 percent below the average 2013 premiums that small employers pay in California's most populated areas. Critics said that when compared to plans currently available on the individual insurance market, the new rates will be far higher. California officials said such a calculation does not take into account the new requirements of Obamacare plans, including wider benefits and a ban on rejecting people due to prior illnesses.

New York: Approved rates for the plans closest to the ones on the market now - the highest tier "gold" or "platinum" plans - are at least 53 percent less than previous rates. Only about 17,000 individuals currently buy insurance directly in New York and the state is counting on 1 million to sign up in the next 3 years, a contributing factor in the price reduction. New York's prices, which start at more than $1,000 per month, have been higher than the national average in part because of existing regulations requiring insurers to take all applicants regardless of health.

Maryland: In a July 26 announcement, Maryland's Insurance Administration focused on the fact that it had lowered rates by about 33 percent during the rate review process by taking an active role in discussions with health insurers. But when compared to the average price of 2013 products, insurer rates are set to rise in a range of 4 percent to 15 percent. The state's pressure on insurers has led Aetna Inc to drop out of the exchange rather than cut its proposed 2014 rates by 29 percent.

    STATES CRITICAL OF OBAMACARE

Ohio: Ohio's Department of Insurance said this week that individuals buying health insurance on the exchange that the federal government is running for the state will pay an average of 41 percent more than they did in 2013. This represents an average of the cost of currently-sold policies at the end of 2012 and those submitted for the exchange.

Florida: Florida's Office of Insurance Regulation said that rates for individuals will rise about 30 to 40 percent next year over prices it estimated for the current individual market. Because policies in the state vary so much in coverage terms, the regulator's office modeled a fictional plan for the current market that assumed the same coverage requirements under Obamacare and compared that with proposed rates for a mid-tier, or silver, plan in 2014.

Georgia: Georgia's Department of Insurance said that rates could rise as much as 198 percent over policies now available to individuals. Officials said that the insurance premiums for a 25-year-old male currently in a high-deductible plan would rise up to 198 percent in 2014 and rates for many others could rise by 20 percent to 100 percent. The government has said that young males, who traditionally have paid the least for insurance, will probably pay more next year as underwriting standards change.

Iran?s new leader calls for removal of ?old wound? of Israel

Iran?s new President, Hassan Rowhani, has called Israel an ?old wound? that should be removed, just two days before his inauguration on Sunday.

Echoing the confrontational style of previous leaders, Mr Rowhani made the comment as Iranians around the country gathered to mark Al-Quds Day (Jerusalem Day). Mass rallies are held annually across Iran to denounce Israel, the country?s nemesis, and show solidarity with the Palestinians.

?The Zionist regime has been a wound on the body of the Islamic world for years and the wound should be removed,? Mr Rowhani said.

FBI Reportedly Absolves Itself for not Preventing Boston Terror Strike

The FBI reportedly has determined that it could have done much to foil the April bombing of the Boston Marathon, the New York Times reported on Thursday.

That apparent determination was reached following multiple internal assessments of how the FBI responded to a 2011 appeal by a Russian intelligence agency to probe whether accused bomber Tamerlan Tsarnaev, now deceased, had become sympathetic to militant Islamist thinking while living in the United States.

Several lawmakers have said the FBI should have done a better job following up on the Russian tip about the elder Tsarnaev brother and monitoring him after 2012 travel back to the United States after a sojourn in Russia. His younger brother, Dzhokhar, is the chief surviving suspect in the April 15 attack, which resulted in three deaths and hundreds of injuries.

The FBI agents who looked into Tsarnaev following the 2011 tip said there were federal legal limits to the type of probing they could do, such as wiretapping.

The experience of treating the many people injured in the Boston attack has led the city's six chief trauma hospitals to modify some of the ways they respond to large-scale incidents, the Boston Globe reported on Tuesday. ?Lessons learned will be made available to other hospitals throughout the United States.

One of the central findings in attack response was the difficulty in timely identification of patients.

Back to School Strategies for Real Estate Professionals | Making ...

    Lessons for Success

    By Julie Escobar

You can almost feel it ? that anxiousness, excitement and uncertainty that envelopes us around this time year after year. Tens of millions of children headed back to classes, and even those without little ones can get caught up in the thirst for knowledge, need for more certain schedules and the never-too-old-for allure of new notebooks and supplies. All right, maybe that last one is just me, but you?ll have to admit there is something exciting about creating a clean slate, learning to the best of our abilities and growing as a sales professional as well as a person.

Ready to get started??You?ve had a healthy breakfast, donned your uniform (name badges everyone!) put on your thinking caps and you?re ready to learn ? right? Here are the ?classes? you must master in this market:

1.?? ?Niche Marketing:??Niche players fare better, earn more, usually are better at time management and can more quickly define themselves as an expert in their market area. Why? First, it gives you clarity of purpose, so you?re more efficient in the way you conduct your business, in the manner you build your skill sets and your knowledge base and in how you grow your customer base. You don?t need to be all things to all people. You just need to be the best at reaching out to, teaching and building relationships with that core group or niche. That not only builds your business faster, but it gives you a sense of certainty and confidence that you wouldn?t have if you were trying to work with any and all customer types.

So who do YOU want to work with most? ?Seniors? ?First time home buyers? ?FSBOs? Luxury Markets? Or maybe outside the box ideas like horse enthusiasts, Harley riders, yacht club members, golfers? Find the fit that?s right for you ? then be the BEST for that niche!

That?s not to say you ignore your sphere ? just keep enhancing it by building niche markets that help it (and your business) to grow!

2.?? ?Leveraging Technology Tools:?Leveraging technology and available networking to maximize your potential for lead generation, prospecting and keeping your pipeline of customers filled is crucial to your success. ?That means learning how to use Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, YouTube and the social networking tools that are available today. It can also mean hosting weekly or monthly conference calls, webinars and workshops for those in your niche, community or sphere of influence. These are great ways to inexpensively and effectively establish and reinforce your niche. Technology allows you to be in many places and in front of many people at one time, which helps you build relationships by using these tools to share information on a regular, consistent basis.

Technology also allows you to put systems in place such as automating the marketing of your listings using systems such as?MLSmailings.com,?www.GettingListingsSold.com??which can take some of the daily, weekly and monthly marketing chores off your to-do list, freeing you up to spend more time at what you do best ? getting face-to-face with customers and prospects.

3.?? ?Work High Priority Activities First.?Real estate agents get paid to build relationships and provide exceptional service. There are plenty of ways to be BUSY in this business- but the activities that matter most are the ones that are directly tied to your bottom line. ?You need to have absolute focus on scheduling the time to prospect, present, close and build relationships before anything else. That means making and KEEPING that appointment with yourself every day.

The last thing we wanted to cover in our time together is how, as sales professionals, we can create good study habits that will also contribute to our success. Got down time? ?In the car, on the treadmill, during your commute? ?Make the most of it by ?plugging in? to top speakers, trainers and coaches that you can listen to on the go.

Another great idea is to begin and end your day with a chance to learn. Keep a book or two beside your bed and spend that first fifteen minutes or so when you rise and before your head hits the pillow at night to drink in new information. It?s a great way to fuel our minds and a powerful way to bookend your day.

Need help??To learn more about how we can help you fuel your business, streamline your systems and take your career to the next level, call our marketing team today at 866.405.3638 or visit our website?www.prospectsplus.com.

    Shazam (for Windows Phone)

Shazam may have lost some of its 'ooh' factor, but it's still devilishly useful if you don't know what that cool song they're playing is. When the app was first released for iPhone, it was a must-download, if for nothing else than its effectiveness as a party trick. The Windows Phone version was updated last June, and while sharing the strengths and limitations of every Shazam app version, it offers some Windows Phone specific capabilities. But Shazam is not without competition on the platform: Not only can you try the similar SoundHound app, but the built-in Bing search feature in Windows Phone has a microphone feature that listens for ambient music and identifies it for you. So let's take Shazam out for a spin and see whether you really need it.

    Setup
Shazam is a free download from the Windows Phone store; a premium version, Shazam Encore costs $5.99, but at this point the free version shows no ads like those on iPhone Shazam, so I can't see any reason to get the paid app. I've asked the company to elucidate the advantages of Encore, and will update this when I hear back.

I tested the app on a Nokia Lumia 928. Like so many mobile apps, Shazam's setup wants access to your location, and, though this seems irrelevant for a music app, it does enable a feature that lets you know what people nearby are Shazam-ing. On first run, you have to accept the user agreement; it's the standard boilerplate that the company is creating a profile on you based on your listening habits.?

    Interface
Shazam's store description boasts that the app has a "glorious new UI" for Windows Phone 8. At first glance, it's really the most basic interface you can imagine: Just a single big button saying "tag now." As with most windows apps, you swipe sideways to get to different pages. After the Tag Now page, these include pages for your recent tags, chart, and local tags. The app's live tile lets you see album art for your last tag, and you can make another live tile for Tag Now, so you can immediately start song recognition. Finally, among interface goodies is the ability to use the album art of your last-viewed tag as the phone's lock screen background.

    Tagging Tunes
I tested the app with increasingly challenging music. Shazam refers to the act of identifying a song "tagging." The app expectedly had no trouble at all tagging the likes of Katy Perry playing at an outdoor Japanese restaurant. Then I headed to Starbucks, where the Art Garfunkel tune playing was no challenge for Shazam, either. The less mass-market Peter Tosh's Rudies Melody was found, too.

But when I headed to an independent coffee shop, things got dicier: The app was unable to identify anything on the hipster baristas' playlist. I held the phone up to the speaker, and I didn't' think the ambient noise was louder than the restaurant and Starbucks, but that might have been a factor in its inability to find the songs. Nor was the app able to identify a song playing on SomaFM, Terre Thaemiz's Hovering Glows or even M-Seven's Contained.

On the classical front, it had more success, identifying the Jasper String Quartet, the wonderful choral group Stile Antico, and even The Harp Consort's Spanish Dances. In all, though, Shazam was far better at identifying music than its nearest competitor, SoundHound, which didn't recognize the harp music or the string quartet.

GARY ? Summertime is anything but vacation time for Larry Crisler, especially this week.

The incoming senior at Bishop Noll led one team to a championship on Wednesday and is hoping to repeat the feat this week in Ohio.

Crlsler helped Team Indiana defend its Crossroads Championship Series title with a 6-2 win over Team Illinois at U.S. Steel Yard.

After posing for a few pictures around the Crossroads trophy, Crisler was ready to hit the road. He and his Indiana Chiefs of Hammond 17-and-under teammates open play Thursday morning in the Pastime Tournaments 17U Mizuno World Series at Ohio State in Columbus.

?It was just pretty fun, a break from the regular summer team,? Crisler said of the Crossroads event, which featured a skills competition, a showcase for college coaches and a four-team tournament that also included teams from Ohio and Michigan.

Crisler only had two at-bats in Wednesday?s eight-inning championship game because Indiana coaches used a 15-man lineup to showcase as many players as possible.

But he made the most of his chances, slugging a pair of doubles. He scored two runs and drove in two more in the seventh, when Indiana put up four runs to break a 2-2 tie.

?It gives me confidence, seeing how I?m going to Ohio today, playing tomorrow (in the World Series),? he said.

Crisler also helped his cause during the showcase; according to Crossroads founder Eric Blakeley, Portage?s Christopher Klenk and Crisler had the two best 60-yard dash times among all the players on hand.

That should boost Crisler?s recruiting stock.

?I?m listening to people right now,? he said. ?I?m pretty excited about that, wondering what schools are going to offer.?

Klenk was 1-for-2 for Indiana on Wednesday, while Portage teammate Kevin Jones saw action on the mound.

Like Crisler, Blakeley came away from the event with a good feeling.

?I?m happy with it,? Blakeley said. ?We did some things ... to kind of tighten up the nomination process. We had a lot more nominations (for players for the state events) this year than last year. ...

?Our events are as good as the hundred coaches out there playing games and scouting players to bring to the event.?

Having the finale at the Steel Yard, where Blakeley finished his playing career with the RailCats, is something he?d like to continue.

?I love this place,? he said. ?This was one of the best baseball experiences I?ve had, to play out my career here. I love coming back here to allow the local kids to be able to come here and bring in people from four states to see what they have here.?

What Queen Elizabeth II's Speech Would Have Been If WWIII Had Happened

The early 1980s was a time of serious dread for many people worried that the U.S. and the Soviet Union might start World War III. And it's easy to understand why. One wrong move by either nuke-equipped country, and it was the end of civilization as we knew it. In fact, that's nearly what happened on September 26, 1983 when a Soviet early warning system falsely detected U.S. missiles headed for Russia. Had Lt. Col. Stanislav Petrov not been skeptical, there's little doubt we'd have seen World War III. And a newly released speech written for the Queen of England gives a peek at what that alternate history may have looked like.

Uruguay's House OKs legal marijuana market plan

MONTEVIDEO, Uruguay (AP) ? Uruguay's unprecedented plan to create a legal marijuana market won its critical first step Wednesday in the lower house of Congress.

All 50 members of the ruling Broad Front coalition approved the proposal just before midnight Wednesday in a party line vote, keeping a narrow majority of the 96 lawmakers present after more than 13 hours of passionate debate.

The measure now goes to the Senate, where passage is expected to make Uruguay the first country in the world to license and enforce rules for the production, distribution and sale of marijuana for adult consumers.

Legislators in the ruling coalition said putting the government at the center of a legal marijuana industry is worth trying because the global war on drugs had been a costly and bloody failure, and displacing illegal dealers through licensed pot sales could save money and lives.

They also hope to eliminate a legal contradiction in Uruguay, where it has been legal to use pot but against the law to sell it, buy it, produce it or possess even one marijuana plant.

"Uruguay appears poised, in the weeks ahead, to become the first nation in modern times to create a legal, regulated framework for marijuana," said John Walsh, a drug policy expert at the Washington Office on Latin America. "In doing so, Uruguay will be bravely taking a leading role in establishing and testing a compelling alternative to the prohibitionist paradigm."

Opponents of the proposal warned that marijuana is a gateway drug and said fostering the bad habits of addicts is playing with fire.

President Jose Mujica had postponed voting for six months to give supporters more time to rally public opinion. However, recent polls said two-thirds of Uruguayans remained opposed despite a "responsible regulation" campaign for the bill.

National Party Deputy Gerardo Amarilla said the government was underestimating the risk of marijuana, which he called a "gateway drug" for other chemical addictions that foster violent crimes.

"Ninety-eight percent of those who are today destroying themselves with base cocaine began with marijuana," Amarilla said. "I believe that we're risking too much. I have the sensation that we're playing with fire."

Dozens of pro-marijuana activists followed the debate from balconies overlooking the house floor, while others outside held signs and danced to reggae music.

"This law consecrates a reality that already exists: The marijuana sales market has existed for a long time, but illegally, buying it from traffickers, and in having plants in your house for which you can be thrown in jail," said Camilo Collazo, a 25-year-old anthropology student. "We want to put an end to this, to clean up and normalize the situation."

Mujica, for his part, said he never consumed marijuana, but that the regulations are necessary because many other people do. "Never in my life did I try it, nor do I have any idea what it is," he told the local radio station Carve.

The heavy toll, costs and questionable results of military responses to illegal drugs have motivated marijuana legalization initiatives in the U.S. states of Colorado and Washington, and inspired many world leaders to re-think drug laws.

The secretary-general of the Organization of American States, Jose Miguel Inzulza, told Mujica last week that his members had no objections. Pope Francis, however, said during his visit to Brazil that the "liberalization of drugs, which is being discussed in several Latin American countries, is not what will reduce the spread of chemical substances."

Under the legislation, Uruguay's government would license growers, sellers and consumers, and update a confidential registry to keep people from buying more than 40 grams a month.

Carrying, growing or selling pot without a license could bring prison terms, but licensed consumers could grow up to six plants at a time at home.

Growing clubs with up to 45 members each would be encouraged, fostering enough marijuana production to drive out unlicensed dealers and draw a line between pot smokers and users of harder drugs.

The latest proposal "has some adjustments, aimed at strengthening the educational issue and prohibiting driving under the effects of cannabis," ruling coalition deputy Sebastian Sabini said. "There will be self-growing clubs, and it will also be possible to buy marijuana in pharmacies" that is mass-produced by private companies.

An Institute for Regulation and Control of Cannabis would be created, with the power to grant licenses for all aspects of a legal industry to produce marijuana for recreational, medicinal or industrial use.
