KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (AP) ? Muslim-majority Malaysia on Tuesday banned a planned concert by Erykah Badu after a photograph appeared showing the Grammy-winning singer with the Arabic word for Allah written on her body.
The American R&B singer was scheduled to perform Wednesday in Kuala Lumpur, but some Muslim groups said Badu was an unsuitable role model for young Malaysians after seeing a publicity photo of her with what appeared to be temporary tattoos of the word Allah on her bare shoulders.
A government committee that includes police and Islamic policy officials decided to forbid Badu's show because the body art was "an insult to Islam and a very serious offense," Information Minister Rais Yatim said in a statement.
The photo of Badu had "triggered public criticism that could jeopardize national security and cause a negative impact to the government's image," the statement added.
The 41-year-old, Dallas-born singer had already arrived in Malaysia. She can stay as a tourist but will not be allowed to perform, an Information Ministry official said on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to make public statements.
Razman Razali, managing director of the show's Malaysian organizer, Pineapple Concerts, said his company hopes the ban will be reversed.
Badu is "worried and dismayed," Razman told The Associated Press. She was slated to perform in an auditorium that can hold about 3,000 spectators.
It was the first concert by a Western performer to be banned in Malaysia in recent years. Several other stars, including Gwen Stefani and Avril Lavigne, were told to dress modestly while performing.
The photograph of Badu, which also appears on her official fan website, attracted attention after Malaysia's most widely read English-language daily, The Star, published it Monday.
On Tuesday, the newspaper apologized to Muslims for what it called an "oversight," saying it deeply regretted any offense sparked by the photo, which was "inadvertently published." The Home Ministry summoned The Star's editors to explain the photograph, which caused some Muslim activists to demand the newspaper's suspension.

But rather than being content with their success and packing up their tents and going home, the protesters say that Change Square, as their protest site is known, will remain in place until there is a complete overhaul of the country?s divided military.
?We will stay here until they restructure the army; then we will consider our revolution a success,? said Mohammed al-Jaradi, a young activist walking between tents to find lunch after midday prayers.
Mr. Saleh?s son and nephews control military and security divisions, while a rebel military commander, Maj. Gen. Ali Mohsin al-Ahmar, who supports the protest movement, controls another unit. In September, troops from each side engaged in deadly clashes on the streets of Sana for weeks.
Analysts say these military leaders wield more power than Mr. Hadi because each division acts as if it were an independent militia loyal to its commander. Protesters maintain that without a united national military, Yemen?s attempt at democratization will be futile.
When asked whether Yemen?s youth revolution had succeeded, Osama Sultan, a student protester, responded with a shrug. ?The important thing now is what Hadi will do with the army,? Mr. Sultan said, sitting next to his laptop in a tent in Change Square.
In a ceremony on Monday afternoon inside Sana?s presidential palace, Mr. Saleh introduced Mr. Hadi as Yemen?s new president, a notably smooth transfer of power after the clashes over the past year, during which hundreds were killed. The new and former Yemeni presidents stood side by side, offering patriotic speeches about the way Yemenis had come together to overcome chaos.
But in Change Square, which stretches about two miles along a major roadway, protesters paid no heed to events in the palace. As proof that they intend to remain in the street, the protesters have fortified their tents in recent weeks, turning them into semipermanent homes made of gray brick. Clotheslines are strung across the middle of the road, and a few protesters have created flower gardens outside their makeshift residences. It is widely believed that factions of the opposition are paying some of the protesters to remain in place and supplying them with free meals.
?The main change now is in the outlook of the people,? Mr. Sultan said. ?Yemenis are notably more optimistic these days, hoping that the Hadi presidency will give them a fresh start.
?But if those responsible are in the same position,? he continued, ?then there will be no change.?
Protesters were eager to see Mr. Saleh leave the country. The former president recently returned to Yemen after seeking medical treatment in the United States, and government officials said he planned to move in the days ahead to either Ethiopia or United Arab Emirates.
?We consider that the election was the first step in our beloved Yemeni revolution,? said Ibrahim Sheikh, a protester.
Despite his delight at seeing Mr. Saleh forced out of office, Mr. Sheikh was keenly aware that the country remained desperately poor, with little government infrastructure, and that his hardships would not change overnight.
?We want work, we want better education,? he said. ?The problem is that the corruption is so spread throughout all of society. The head of the corruption is gone, and this will start to help things a little.?
Signs of state collapse were everywhere. Government ministries have been destroyed by last year?s war in Sana. If a traffic officer does not show up for work, cars sit jammed at an intersection. Gun battles between tribesmen have killed at least seven people on the streets of Sana in the past few days.
Even some of the most optimistic Yemenis talk about the country?s future in the conditional.
?If we don?t reach an agreement on how to proceed over the next year, the problems are going to come back,? said Tala Aqlan, a Socialist Party member. ?And worse than they were before.?

As the internet continues to become the dominant force in the real estate industry, many agents & Boards of Realtors are now realizing the long term impacts of choices that they may have made several years ago, and how they are impacting their business today.? The latest news is of an IDX Civil War in Austin Texas regarding listing syndication and its impact on the industry as a whole.
Listing syndication is definitely a hot topic nowadays ? and is definitely gaining momentum as persons realize the importance of their online presence.? However, there is some misunderstanding even amongst agents themselves.
The issue REALLY needs to be broken down into 2 topics:
#1? How listings should be handled with syndication/advertisement on 3rd party listing aggregation companies (such as Zillow, Trulia, etc.).
#2 How listings should be handled among cooperating licensed brokers & agents on their respective websites that are members of the same Board of REALTORs.
?
Many persons mistakenly are attempting to lump it all together as ?all internet advertising?.? Touching on the first topic of 3rd party listing aggregation companies:? essentially, these are a 3rd party group of venture capital funded persons whose primary business model is to take Listings for ?free? from agents ? and then sell leads directly (through selling of buyer leads themselves) or indirectly (through featured agent/listing placement on their site).? Basically ? they take something for free from agents, and then repackage it ? and charge agents a fee for something that agents gave to them in the first place.
These 3rd party companies typically are not licensed to practice real estate, nor are they typically members of the local Boards of REALTORs.? This also means that they do not have to comply with the same exact rules as licensed agents that are furnishing the listings in the first place.? (Such as:? These 3rd party companies generally are able to display SOLD listing data on their site, whereas licensed real estate agents generally are not.)? This places agents at a tremendous competitive disadvantage.? They have more rules and regulations with which to comply ? and yet, they are competing for the very same internet presence that the 3rd party companies are attempting to get.
As a result, many agents are wanting a more level playing field.? They feel that whatever these 3rd party sites are able to do (or not do) from a marketing standpoint, the same should be applied to agents.? For the agents that are concerned about listing syndication for the 3rd party sites:? its all about free trade, fair play in business ? and a level playing field.
Additionally, many REALTORs that are primarily Listing or Seller?s Agents, are also wanting to get items added to the listings that are displayed such as Their Phone Number, Website Address, Email, Logo, Watermarking of their Photos with their Team Branding Contact Information, etc on these syndicated sites ? so that customers can contact them directly without having to pay for the leads.
Editorial Note:? I personally have no issue whatsoever with additional agent branding, contact info, etc being required for use on the 3rd party syndication sites.

The 2nd half of the topic is listing syndication commonly referred to as IDX across other agents websites.? This is where the issue takes an entirely different spin.? It needs to be recognized that there are 2 types of agents:
1.? BUYER AGENTS
2.? SELLER AGENTS (aka listing agents)
Unlike the above issue, Agents are all operating on the same level playing field from a rules/regulation standpoint of marketing.?? Those persons that want an internet presence to create a Buyer?s Brokerage, are free to allocate their time/resources/money toward that end.? Those persons that want to solicit listings and be a Seller?s Brokerage (listing brokerage), are free to allocate their time/resources/money toward that desired goal.
Its all about cooperating and working together for the good of the industry, and making it easy for consumers.? The addition of listing broker team branding/logos/contact information, etc ? would cause the Buyer?s Agents to essentially be providing advertising for Listing Agents, as the consumer would be more likely to call the Listing Agent despite the lead being generated from the Buyer?s Agents website.
This would be fairly akin to saying:? ?Buyer?s Agents should be able to place THEIR sign in the yard of listings that other agents have?.? After all, more advertisement is good for their seller, right????? It makes the exact same sense.
Listing agents already have a tremendous amount of advantages in place:? yard signs, open houses, local media advertisements, postcard mailouts, etc, etc.? Beyond the internet, what do Buyer?s Agents have that will realistically generate business in today?s market?? Very little.? The conversion numbers of customers from a postcard that says ?Want to Buy a Home?? Call me.? are going to be very low, compared to what the listing agent is able to generate with advertising their listings.
If listing agents were allowed to have the additional contact information, or branding advertisements (logos, watermarking of photos, etc), this will completely segment real estate agents as a whole ? because Buyers Agents will not advertise listings that have their competitors contact information on it.? What would consumers do if this happens?? This would be a tremendous blow to the industry, as it would force consumers to go to the 3rd party listing aggregation sites to find ?all the listings? that are currently on the market.
The solution is to separate the topic into 2 issues.? Address them separately.? And to unite REALTORs together for the common good of the industry.

Obama urges governors to boost education funding

Obama made his pitch to governors at the White House Monday as part of the winter meeting of the National Governors Association.
Obama said many states are cutting too deeply into education funding as a way to balance their budgets, and he urged governors to hire more teachers and restore funding to public education.
Obama said that education funding is critical if the U.S. is to remain competitive with other nations, saying that other countries are "doubling down" on education funding.

There has been a barrage of headlines about the tax plans released Wednesday by President Barack Obama and Republican candidate Mitt Romney.
Obama announced closing corporate tax loopholes and lowering the rate corporations would pay from 35% to 28%. And in recent weeks Obama has indicated he'd keep the Bush tax cuts in place for most Americans and raise the effective tax rate on individuals making more than $250,000 a year.
Meanwhile Romney announced cutting the individual tax rate by 20% across the board. The former Massachusetts governor was already on the record for cutting corporate tax rates form 35% to 25%.
Beyond those details, we do no know much more about the plans, yet analysts and pundits have managed to scrutinize the impact each would have on individuals, corporations and the U.S. debt load.
Howard Davidowtiz, CEO of Davidowitz and Associates, who has dealt with restructuring debt -- albeit corporate debt -- for years, joined The Daily Ticker's Aaron Task to size up the plans. He does not give much credence to either Obama or Romney's plan, or any of the candidates' plans for that matter, calling them "strictly political documents."
"We are in the silly season. We're in the political season," he says in the accompanying interview. "No one has any integrated plan and nothing, as always, is paid for."
In his estimation, the government needs to save $12 trillion to really start digging the country out of its crippling debt burden, and none of the plans on the table do that. From the looks of it, most of the plans would actually add more to current debt levels. You can't solve a debt problem with more debt, says Davidowitz, who is known to be a very outspoken conservative. "We need integrated thinking about taxes."
If it were up to him, he'd let the Bush Tax cuts expire at the end of the year for everyone, which he says would save the country $4 trillion right there. He'd also lower the corporate tax rate in an effort to bring home the billions of U.S. corporate profits trapped over seas.

Friendship 7 is at the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum in Washington, D.C., today. It's encased in a plastic shell so you can't touch the heat shield, but you can see it up close ? still scarred with the sunburst-like rays that speak to the hellfire it felt in 1962. Back then, all heat shields were what's known as ablative ? meaning they were designed to disintegrate, burning off slowly and carrying the heat away from the vehicle. It's not as if she wants to be in jail for five years, of course. Portwood's attorney says that it's "not true" that his client would prefer to change her plea and do jail time.
But it is true that the drug court that's allowing Portwood to rehabilitate at the halfway house has ordered the facility not to allow a camera crew inside, and we hear that's got the single mom on edge.
Per the drug court's terms, Portwood must spend eight months rehabbing at Sister 2 Sister Ministries in Anderson, Ind., and, once she moves out, get a real full-time job--i.e. one that doesn't involve reality-show cameras. The judge has warned her that if she violates her strict probation in any way, she'll be locked up -- and she's facing a maximum of five years in prison on the felony drug-possession charge.
The third season of "Teen Mom" is scheduled to premiere April 3. Portwood hasn't been filmed for the show since around Thanksgiving time. She has been in custody since before Christmas.
Portwood said in court last week that she had been under the impression that she would be allowed to live with her grandparents -- i.e., tape her show -- while fulfilling the terms of her sentence (counseling, regular check-ins with the court, etc.), so being ordered to a halfway house caught her by surprise.

A source close to her confirms that the court has been in touch with MTV about what is expected of Portwood over the next year and that the network is being cooperative -- which, according to the insider, is freaking Portwood out because the show has been her sole source of income and most of her savings have gone to legal fees.
Amber decided Saturday that she would rather "do her time now and get it out of the way," the source said. The halfway house is "not the right place for her. She'd have a 10 p.m. curfew and would never see Leah because she wouldn't want to bring Leah around that place."

Researchers have unearthed a forest in northern China preserved under a layer of ash deposited 300 million years ago.
Preservation of the forest, just west of the Inner Mongolian district of Wuda, has been likened to that of the Italian city of Pompeii.
The researchers were able to "reconstruct" nearly 1,000 sq m of the forest's trees and plant distributions.
This rare insight into how the region once looked is described in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
The excavations sampled three sites across a large expanse that was covered with about a metre of ash.
Due to the pristine preservation of some of the plants, the team estimate the ash fell over the course of just a few days, felling and damaging some of the trees and plants under its weight but otherwise keeping them intact.
"It's marvelously preserved," said study co-author Hermann Pfefferkorn of the University of Pennsylvania in the US.
"We can stand there and find a branch with the leaves attached, and then we find the next branch and the next branch and the next branch. And then we find the stump from the same tree. That's really exciting."
The team identified six groups of trees, ranging from low-lying tree ferns to now-extinct 25m trees Sigillaria and Cordaites, as well well-preserved specimens of another extinct group called Noeggerathiales.
Based on the findings, the team worked with a painter to depict what the forest would have looked like before the ash cloud descended.
Prof Pfefferkorn said that, as a particularly complete and well-caught moment in time, the forest would serve as a "baseline" for assessing future finds.
"It's like Pompeii," he said. "Pompeii gives us deep insight into Roman culture, but it doesn't say anything about Roman history in and of itself.
"But on the other hand, it elucidates the time before and the time after. This finding is similar. It's a time capsule and therefore it allows us now to interpret what happened before or after much better."
