SUMMARY
The Parent Educator/Home Visitor will provide in-home visitation/education services to prenatal to age 5 children promoting their involvement and providing information and resources to support parents, expectant women, grandparents/ legal guardian?s raising young children with goal setting, educational development and referral services to increase parental knowledge and improve parenting practices. Parent Educators will implement the Parents As Teachers curriculum model with cultural adaptations. Position is responsible for data collection and reporting. The Parent Educator/Home Visitor reports to an on-site supervisor for day-to-day needs, and to the SPIPA Healthy Families Project Coordinator for programmatic supervision and reporting. Position located at the Family Services Department. This is a grant funded position.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

(Other duties may be assigned)

Provide culturally appropriate parent instruction and delivery of information to tribal families in the services areas of the Tribe and/or SPIPA.

Successful completion of the Parents As Teachers Certification within 60 days of hire.

Demonstrate knowledge of child development practices and age appropriate activities

Assist parents in developing strategies to strengthen their effectiveness.

Provides referral and resource services to local, tribal and community services.

Recommend cultural accommodations and adaptations to PAT curriculum.

Help families improve economic self-sufficiency by promoting job preparation, work and healthy relationships.

Model positive parenting strategies to assist parents/families to more effectively raise their children and provide a safe and effective learning environment.

Provide referral services in the prevention efforts of teen pregnancies

Encourage and promote the involvement of both parents in childhood development.

Provide materials and resources to build core competency skills of parents & family

Adhere to the mission of the Healthy Families Project and the Parents As Teachers evidence-based model.

Recruit families for participation in project

Perform reliable & valid assessments of early childhood development

Attend required training

Attend required meetings

Collect and submit all required Data

Occasional travel to other SPIPA or Intertribal locations.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

Bachelor?s Degree from an accredited university in Early Childhood Education, Social Work or related field? OR Associate?s Degree in Early Childhood Education, Social Work, or a related field with two years of experience working with Native families; OR High School Diploma/GED and four years of experience working in Early Childhood Education/Development with Native families.

Child Development Association credential (CDA) desired.

Must successfully complete Parents As Teachers certification training and program required continuing education.

Must possess an understanding or have the ability to gain an understanding of Federal TANF regulations and Federal/Tribal Indian Child Welfare services.

One? year of working directly with a Native American community and tribal families is preferred.

Understanding of best practices and principles of child development, healthy family structure, prevention and intervention services and resources.

Understanding of early childhood screening processes for ages birth-5 years.

Demonstrated ability to communicate verbally and in writing professionally in a positive and proactive manner.

Understanding of data collection and system processes.

Must have or be able to demonstrate knowledge and respect of tribal culture and values of the tribal community.

Strong computer skills with three years? experience with Microsoft Officer/or similar.

Ability to work effectively, either independently or cooperatively with others to develop projects.

LANGUAGE SKILLS
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.? Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.? Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
Must have a valid Washington State Driver?s License. Must successfully pass a criminal history background check.
