New Zealand's heroes of the Olympics have been rained out of Hagley Park.
A welcome-home event was to have been held in South Hagley Park next Friday, but the heavy rain that has pelted Christchurch in the past week has made the park unusable.
'Hagley Park is flooded, and even if we wait a week, the ground simply won't be dry enough to handle any large crowds, vehicles or infrastructure on August 24,' Christchurch City Council spokesman John Filsell said.
The venue for the celebrations will now be the Pioneer Recreation and Sport Centre in Spreydon.
"It's a great facility with plenty of capacity and can be used rain or shine, and we're sure that the event will be just as memorable," Filsell said.
The schedule of events remains unchanged, with Christchurch sports fans welcoming their Olympic heroes at noon.
After a ceremony, the Olympians, hopefully including most of the 27 medal winners, will move to nearby Centennial Park to sign autographs, have photos taken, answer questions and compete against fans in various activities, including hockey, volleyball, athletics, football and inflatable boxing.
There will be competitions, interactive games and music, including performances from the New Zealand Army Band.
After the ceremony, some athletes will visit schools, hospitals, care facilities and businesses.
