Salt Grass Trail Ride to Head Through Washington County

For the first time in 33 years, the Salt Grass Trail Ride will wind its way through Washington County.

The original idea for the trail ride first began as a topic of conversation over lunch between Brenham native, Reese Lockett and a handful friends during January of 1952. As the group talked about the Salt Grass rides of pioneer days, Lockett told the story of a bad experience he had while flying to the Orange Bowl in Florida. Because of that trip, Lockett said he would never take another trip where he couldn't arrive at his destination by horse.

Lockett's desire to attend the then called Houston Fat Stock Show, prompting from his friends and rodeo committee members launched the idea for the Salt Grass Trail Ride. Eventually, 30 riders made in the first trip and now thousands participate.

On February 15th, riders will begin gathering at the Washington County Fairgrounds in Brenham and the following day, they'll hitch up their wagons, saddle up and make their way to Houston.
