Jamie Gahlon has asked theater artists from around the country to talk about their personal search for an artistic home. Diane Ragsdale continues this series.

What makes an artistic home?
An artistic home is co-created. It implies a steady relationship: a place an artist can return to periodically, or stay for a period of time, and in that place find particular resources and support from a theater, which is able and enthused to provide them because having the artist ?come home? brings life and meaning to the theater. It?s reasonable to think that artists desire and require different environments and people working with them (in general, and at different points in their processes or lives) to feel ?at home.? In other words, there?s no such thing as an ?artistic home-making kit? that would work for all artists and all theaters at all times. An artistic home implies that the home owners (the artistic staff at the very least, but ideally the entire staff and board) know the artist, and understand and appreciate his or her work and process; that the artist knows and understands the ethos of the theater and its purpose and processes; and that (upon honest assessment) both parties believe they are able to create an artistic home together.

Where and how did you find yours and what does it mean to you?
I?ve never had an artistic home as I?m not an artist. If I were an artist, I imagine my artistic home would be the place where I have had the most satisfying work experiences?the place I yearn to be because I need the place as much as it needs me. I imagine it would mean feeling comfortable calling the artistic director of a theater on a regular basis, or knowing he or she would call me on a regular basis, and talking a bit about what?s going on with me and my work, and what?s going on at the theater, and knowing that we are both interested to sustain the relationship and work together. I imagine it would mean that either side can ask the other for something and can expect to receive a compassionate, open reception and honest, thoughtful response.

How can one create and/or build an artistic home for others?
As corny as it sounds, perhaps what makes a place an ?artistic home? is the mutual acknowledgement between the artist and the theater that the artist has become ?family??that both parties perceive that they have already committed to one another in heart and mind and now it?s just a matter, perhaps, of formalizing the relationship. One imagines there could be shared goals or at the very least a tacit sense of how working together on a regular basis might be mutually beneficial.

What is the artistic home of the future?
I would suspect that the artistic home of the future will need to be able to house not simply single artists but collectives of artists (writer/director/composer, choreographer/writer/actor) who need a place to create work. It also seems that the artistic home of the future will not merely be asked to provide ?shelter? but to be a ?melting pot? where artists come and go and, while they are in residence, have impact on the theater as much as receive resources from it. An artistic home would ideally imply shared ownership (of the physical space, of the idea space). After the artist leaves, one would hope that his or her influence would continue to be seen and felt in the offices and board room, on the stage, and in the ethos of the theater.

I am drowning in content.

At first, I liked having so much to choose from and scroll through. ?But now I find myself overwhelmed every time I sit down to my computer.

I have all these incredible sources of information and insight at my fingertips. I can?t help but feel like they are less valuable when retained for only me to see ? these findings must be shared, their impact passed on.

In an attempt to get organized, I?d like to take this time to look into all the content aggregators I have bombarded myself with and then work out a way to strategically push different types of content.

Tools for Aggregating Content

TWITTER

I have divided the accounts I follow into lists (which you can access and follow?here). I have contact lists (people I follow, get to know and intend to keep in touch with) and content lists (sources of information).

Content

Business,?Fashion,?Humour,?Health/Fitness,?Film,?Blogs/Zines/Magazines,?Music,?News,?Women?s Organizations,?Inspirational,?Tech

Contacts
Entrepreneurs,?Media Industry,?Arts & Culture Industry,?Entertainment Industry,?Music, Industry,?Film Industry,?Friends

Pros: Twitter content moves quickly so that you can view more content in less time. You can sort all your content so that you can follow specific topics.
Cons: 140 character limit. If I find something I want to share on Twitter that can?t be conveyed in so few words I usually share the content through a different platform that is then pushed through Twitter as a shorter form link.

GOOGLE READER

Artsy, Business, Film, Music, LOL Blogs, News, Health/Lifestyle, Social Media, Tech, Zines?(click on each topic to see the blogs I have compiled in each category)

Pros: I can view information-heavy content in ?List View? and scan through headlines instead of having to scan through entire articles. I can view picture/video content in ?Expanded View? and scroll through content seamlessly. The Google Reader app on my phone is one of my most used, great for jumping from one article to the next while sitting on public transport.
Cons: I have compiled far too many blogs to be able to keep up with. I need to pay attention to the content being share by each blog and cull those that I am less interested in.

FACEBOOK PAGES

Page ?Likes? are all the rage these days and most companies/organizations/bands/celebs seem to be reverting to FB Pages to push their content.

Pros: Great for re-posting content to Facebook friends using ?Share? button.
Cons: ?Facebook feed becomes consumed with impersonal content. I enjoy using Facebook for personal connections and content. I can?t sort out my likes or control how they show up in my feed.

Tools for Sharing Content?

Now that I know what content I have to work with, I need to work out how I will push such content in the most strategic way possible. Of great importance here is the way the content is displayed, shared and what audiences it reaches.

Facebook ? Good for sharing a wide range of content with a specific audience (of friends) in mind.

Twitter ? I intend to push all content sharing platforms are pushed through Twitter (Facebook, Tumblr, Delicious, Pinterest) . My twitter account will show off all my social media activity in one place ? my aims are for this to become my biggest and most varied audience.

Google+ - Using the Google + button, I intend to share all Social Media related content. Most of the users I have on Google + are social media/tech oriented.

Tumblr ? For sharing pics, videos, quotes related to music, film, design, humour, inspiration, etc.

Delicious ? For sharing and compiling interesting resources to refer to later or share with others.

Pinterest ? For sharing Fashion, Decor, Places, Recipes.

And now suddenly, after putting some thought into my aggregation and sharing processes, I?ve developed a strategic social media sharing plan! ?I will have to put it to the test and see where it takes me. I can?t wait!

How to ask for feedback ? Business Management Daily: Free ...

You crave it. And you probably don?t get enough of it. Here?s how to ask for feedback on your performance:

1.??Schedule it. Your boss needs to be available. You?ll need a private place. And plan ahead so the other person has time to think.

2.??Explain what you want. Say, ?I need your take on some of my recent work,? or ?How do I come across to our internal and external customers??

3.??Don?t fish for compliments. People will hold back if they doubt you want an honest assessment. Say, ?I think I may not be seen as a ?problem-solver?.? How do you think I could change that??

4.??Ask for specifics. It helps de??fuse the tension. If your boss says you always do something or other, say, ?Wow, I didn?t realize I came off that way. I really don?t want to give that impression. Can you think of a situation where I?ve done that recently??

5.??Stop being defensive. This is the hardest part. It?s so easy to blurt out confrontational questions like, ?Why do you say that?? or ?What does that mean??

6.??Thank them. Be appreciative. And ask for more feedback.

7.??Approach others. Ask the same questions and look for patterns.

8.??Develop an action plan. If you?ve done this right, you should have actionable material. After you?ve worked on your behavior for a month or two, make the rounds again.
