Our Chateau: On Holiday, at Home

Chris asked me what I wanted to do for Labor Day weekend. It?s rare for all of us to have a three day weekend.? All I really wanted was time together and time with the kids.

?I just want to stay here in town, but I want to make it count?.

I jotted down a list of things I wanted to do. Some of the things were fun, some of things would help me have more fun later on:

Make waffles?

A 10+ mile run with James

Pizza party

Barbecue with my parents

Go out for frozen yogurt

Play board games with Kelsey and her boyfriend

Take a nap with Lilah

Finish the book I need to read for grad school

An extra run on Monday

Walks after dinner

Quality home date time after the kids are in bed preferably over a bottle of dry, red wine

Playing at a park

Watch a movie

Go grocery shopping and plan our meals for the week

Set up the September calendar with everyone?s activities

We did everything on the list and more.?

?

We walked hand in hand in various combinations.

James and I saw a family of deer on our long run.

We went out for Italian food.

This weekend Lilah started saying thank you, although it still sounds more like ?ga gou?.? She also decided she loves to lay a napkin across her lap at dinner, and periodically she uses it to dab at her mouth--ridiculous.

Chris and I had not one, but two home dates.

James stayed up late and finished reading the science fiction novel he?s been working on.? He loves vocabulary and this weekend he learned the words ?peripheral? ?conjunction? and ?socialism?. ?He also wrote about an imaginary country in South America that specializes in engineering low emissions vehicles.

I slept so hard I started talking in my sleep. Chris is still laughing about it.

Lilah fed Shadow a home grown tomato right from our garden.

I made time for a pedicure?hooray for pretty purple toes.

I made us fantastic stuffed mushrooms.?

Over the three days James and I ran almost 20 miles.

We all had some wonderful full body laughs.

James told us a riddle that was both clever and funny.

This weekend I was reminded again how much perspective maters. ?Yes, we stayed home, but this weekend was absolutely a vacation.? This weekend we remembered to value the simple things and the most important things-- each other.? All the joy in world is usually right in front of you, and often it?s no further away than your own backyard.?
