>>> we are learning more this morning about jovan belcher 's state of mind , before the nfl player fatally shot his girlfriend and took his own life last weekend. kansas city police have released a video of belcher just hours before the shooting. michelle franzen has the details for us.
>> reporter: there had been talk that belcher was drinking this night, but officials say there was no indication the pro football player was intoxicated. he was not arrested, cited, or was driving his car at the time that they questioned him. in the final hours before kansas city chiefs linebacker jovan belcher took his own life and authorities say killed his girlfriend kasandra perkins, the pro football player was questioned by kansas city police officers as he sat in his car outside an apartment building. the newly released dash cam video by the kansas city police department , officers are shown arriving on scene december 1st after receiving a 911 call. they found belcher asleep in his car. police questioned him and say belcher told police he was there to visit a girlfriend.

>> reporter: later belcher is heard thanking the officers and walking away.

>> reporter: in a statement, police say they did not have any reason to believe belcher was drinking and did not have any reason to hold him. police tell nbc news, the officers acted appropriately. they did not smell alcohol on him, he was not stumbling, etc., so there was nothing more to do than to get him to go inside, which they could not compel him to do. he did not get special treatment. the call was handled the same way it would have been for anyone. the exchange occurred just hours before investigators say belcher went to his home he shared with his girlfriend kasandra perkins and shot her. investigators say belcher then drove to the team's practice facility at arrowhead stadium and shot himself in front of his coaches. police also released dash cam video of officers responding to calls of the shooting. meanwhile, teammates attended a memorial this past week for the linebacker and police continued to investigate the murder-suicide. the kansas city chiefs have set up a fund for belcher 's 3-month-old daughter, who was at the house with belcher 's mother at the time of the shooting. erica?
