Paul Lawrie has dismissed the recent criticism of Castle Stuart and says it is is a fitting venue for the Scottish Open.
The Inverness layout recently came under fire from Graeme McDowell who said the course was "one dimensional" and "not strong enough" to host the traditional warm-up tournament before the Open Championship.
McDowell previously won the event when it was played at Loch Lomond but believes the organisers made a mistake by switching it to the links venue in 2011 and says it has lost some of its prestige.
Lawrie has now come out in support of Castle Stuart and believes the Scottish Open is still one of the biggest tournaments on the calendar.
"I don't want to get into an argument with Graeme but I think everyone was gobsmacked at his comments," he told the Daily Record.
"Nothing Graeme said made any sense - but I guess we have all said things in the past that makes you think 'Oh God, what have I done?'
"It's disappointing because there are a lot of good people who put so much hard work into making the Scottish Open the success that it is."
